For most of the Chrisman girls basketball players, Friday night and Saturday was an opportunity to celebrate their win over Lee’s Summit North and taking the District Championship and
That was not the case for Maggie Beem and Sarah Erickson.
They got to enjoy the win and then turn around and prepare for another district performance in band.
“It was exciting on the night of the game because we had such a big crowd to play in front of, ”says Erickson, “I tried to take each thing one at a time rather than thinking about both at the same time. I focused on the game, and then after we won, I celebrated with my team and then went home and focused on my tuba solo to make sure I perform my best the next day.”
With both a district game and a district performance at stake, it was nerve wracking for these young student-athletes.
“I was nervous for both, but a different nervousness for each one. I was nervous for my team and knew I had to perform well Friday night for them, and for band I was nervous having to perform my French horn solo in front of a judge. It went from a team nervousness to a nervousness on myself to perform well.” said senior Maggie Beem.
There was plenty of time put into practicing to do well in both areas, so they can perform well.
“It was hard, but finding a balance between practicing both basketball and my French horn was important.” says Beem
Erickson also agreed that the build up was difficult.
“That whole week I was nervous, there was pressure put on me by my peers at school about the game. On top of that there was pressure to do well on my tuba solo from private lessons instructor. I even broke down once but eventually pulled through and all the time spent on both was worth it.” said Erickson
Both young women performed well coming home with a District Championship title as well as earning a superior rating, which secured a spot to perform at State.
For Erickson and Beem, both district performances in basketball and band were both equally important, and they both came out with a successful weekend.
