Lady Bears Win District Championship

Last year, the William Chrisman girls’ basketball team was upset by three points to crosstown rival Truman in the District Championship. It left a senior-laden team in shock.
After a 22-3 season and losing six seniors, the Lady Bears might have been thought to be having a ‘rebuilding year’.
But, that’s not what happened as the Bears won 20 games for the second-straight season and with a 35-31 win against Lee’s Summit North on Friday in the District Championship game advanced to Sectionals.
“We lost many seniors, and a lot of people doubted us,” sophomore guard Mikahla Jaggers said.
Going into the Missouri Class 5 District 14 tournament the Bears were the #1 seed.
The Bears got back to where their season ended last year in the district championship but this year they faced Lee’s Summit North.
While the Bears may have been the favorites by record, they were not favored in the size matchup. The Broncos had two girls who were both above six foot.
This height advantage led to the Broncos out rebounding the Bears 40-25.
“We did well, considering they were very big,” junior Bri Burns said
The game was back and forth all night but the Bears were finally able to pull away late in the fourth quarter after a few missed Bronco layups.
Chrisman’s speed is what helped them create turnovers as they were able to beat the Broncos on their feet and score 20 points off of Bronco miscues.
The Bears were able to come away with the victory and their first district title since the 09-10 season.
Pacing the Bears in scoring was junior Adreon Bell who had 13, followed by Jaggers who netted 12.
“It honestly means a lot; we’ve been working so hard to get to where we are at today.” Jaggers stated
With the victory William Chrisman will play Belton in sectionals on Wednesday at 3:00p.m. at the Silverstein Eye Center Arena in Independence.
