New Business Teacher Making Chrisman a Family Affair
Story by: Dorthy Padilla and Morgan Eckstein
Cynthia Perry is new to William Chrisman. She has been teaching for 18 years and just recently completed her Master’s degree, which was a goal that she worked very hard on to accomplish.
Perry used to be a business teacher at Warrensburg high school. Her and her family just moved here to Independence so that she could be closer to her extended family. However she is not the only member of her family to become part of the Chrisman family, both her husband and son are apart of the Chrisman family.
Her husband Matt Perry is a new counselor and football coach and their son is a freshman.
Perry is a business teacher here and she teaches management, business and computer technology, marketing, and multimedia.
She is also the sponsor of DECA and highly encourages everyone to join.
“Join DECA!” she exclaimed.
She believes that DECA gives students amazing opportunities and will even be helpful after graduation. DECA gives out scholarships and gives the students experience that they can use throughout their lifetime. DECA is an opportunity for everyone and can help accomplish future goals.
Perry is a goal setter and thinks that everyone should have goals. She believes that if you don’t have goals then you are just drifting through life. If you have goals then you have a good idea of where you want to go in life. She encourages everyone to set goals and accomplish the small goals before jumping to the big goal.
“Goals are very important because if you have goals, then you are motivated and therefore be more likely to succeed,” she explained.

New English Teacher Quickly Making an Impression
By: Jordan Hill & Abbie Faught
New English teacher Peter Mishler is already having a big impact in his classroom.
“He brings great energy to the classroom and he’s already ready to teacher,” senior Tyler Woodward said. “He always has a smile on his face.”
Mishler came to Chrisman after teaching in New York for eight years. He was a high school teacher at Liverpool high school in New York and also a college instructor at Syracuse.
He moved to Kansas City a few weeks before the school year started and he wasn't too sure what to expect. But, he loves it!
"William Chrisman has much more respect for teachers and each other as a student body," he said.
He also said that he believes that the students at Chrisman also have much stronger values. The biggest challenge he has faced in Kansas City is not knowing anything about students or what they've experienced in the classroom. He has to create lessons about things he doesn't necessarily know or has taught so he's also learning everyday while teaching.
But, he has quickly reached students.
“He makes students understand what they are writing and how they are writing rather than just throwing it at them and saying ‘Go for it.’”
Mishler has made an impact on his fellow English teachers as well.
“I am really impressed with him,” English teacher Sandy Fetters said. “He jumped right into the position. He seems to get along with students and other teachers. … He has already asked to bring in speakers about writing. He is a great addition to the English department.”
