Lady Bears Get Early Start With Offseason Soccer
Story By: Kayli Perez
As soccer girls are coming back from their winter break their focus is shifting to pre-season workouts. The girls will be lifting weights, running, and doing ball touches. All of which are things that most girls have not done since their club fall season or the last years season.
There will be a lot of work put in before the season even begins. The team will use the time to train and bond with each other. Last year, the team had one of their best records for their season and hope to take it further this year.
Celeste Cummins says, “I am not physically ready for the upcoming season, but I am mentally. I hope and expect most of the varsity girls to be there for me to get in better shape,”
Cummins is a Junior at Chrisman who played varsity last year. Another Junior who played alongside her was Katie Laughlin, who agreed with Cummins.
“The workouts will hopefully get us ready to be in shape and there have been a lot of girls going but we are still looking for more girls to come out and try this year. It should be a good season, and I have been training when the weather allows to go on a run or mess with a ball,” said Laughlin.
The team is looking for more athletes to come out and give soccer a try, maybe starting on JV but moving up to bring varsity numbers up this year as well.
The workouts take place in room 109, which is the head coach Mr. Straub's room, at 2:30-3:15 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. As well as after-school workouts, Straub is giving girls a chance to play futsal on Thursdays from 6-8pm.
“We are laying down a foundation for future success by these workouts,” said Straub, “you can come have a lot of fun while working hard this pre-season, and get to know me as a coach.”
The team has a lot of fun while working out and all grades can enjoy and bond with a group this spring. Sophomore Abby Bauman said, “I am very excited for this season I have been waiting so long for it, and I wish I could do futsal, but with a conflicting schedule in basketball, I am unable. I do however hope that all of my teammates will be there at least varsity, to get in shape and touches so that this season can be great!”
